I can’t keep track of the countless times that I have sourly walked out of a store because the item that I wanted was out-of-stock. Instances like this make me turn away from the store all together. Well, I recently looked for an item and I was about to leave the store in the dust when they decided to flip the script and make it all better…

My old messenger bag was beginning to wear out, so I figured it was the right time to look for a new bag. My old messenger bag gave me three faithful years of service- lugging overweight textbooks to and from class. Since it was time for a change, I decided to stop by the Eaton Centre to look for a new Herschel “Little America” backpack.

I visited a store inside the Eaton Centre where every product was neatly displayed- the Herschel bags hung on display walls to showcase them. I was able to clearly see the different styles of Herschel backpacks that they had on sale and they made it very easy to compare sizes. As I browsed around the store, one of the sales associates kindly greeted me and asked me if I needed any assistance. I told the sales associate that I was looking for a Herschel Little America backpack in a navy color. He told me that they did not carry that specific backpack in navy, but they did have the mid volume version in navy, which was a slightly smaller version of the original Little America. Sensing my hesitation, the store associate pulled the bag down from the display so that I could try it on for size. He also stated the dimensions of the bag and the benefits, and in the end I decided it was a perfect fit.

To top off his awesome selling and customer service skills, the sales associate told me to wait while he went to the stockroom to grab me a brand new bag that was still in it’s plastic wrapping. Overall, the staff was friendly, helpful, and very engaged in the process. While I could have been very unhappy at the fact that they didn’t stock the item that I originally wanted, I was rather delighted when they averted the crisis and showed me a Herschel bag that I liked just as much as the one I had wanted. This goes to show that maybe great customer service isn’t too hard to find.
